Whilst these instruments (in this image) are not characters, the UPA style allows you play with shape, character, and animation in more abstract ways. Such as animating the sound itself.
You could also look at visualising the world of the orchestra in more graphical and ways. The animation below is be a former student and visualises he Mothers memories of India using graphical/abstract. This isn't music but it does use the same method.
